Ms Cateura paints deceptively simple color field paintings that, “question how we experience and relate to nature in an increasingly urbanized world.” Painted in acrylic on canvas, these peculiar geometric shapes float seemingly weightless in spaces of intense monochromatic colors and are on closer inspection a building, or a machine or beams of headlights on a mountain road at midnight. Behind the serene whimsy of her visual meditations Cateura laboriously manipulates the color and position of objects in each composition. Rather than relying on premixed color she makes the paint in every painting from scratch by mixing pigment with acrylic medium and water. The placement of objects in each piece is methodically worked out to create expanses of space and acts as a foil to the flatness of her color fields. These abstract allusions to our physical world are grounded in an imaginary solid, yet enigmatic space of trees, lakes and mountains. By playfully juxtaposing the natural and man-made worlds Cateura's work explores more than the intersection of minimalism, Pop and Asian art that she notes as influences. She hopes to question the control humans think they have over nature. By highlighting the simplicity of nature through color and minimal abstraction in an almost cartoonish landscape she intends to provide a contemplative space in our increasingly frenetic, technologically based lives that demonstrates nature’s color, simplicity and vibrancy.
Patty Cateura maintains her studio at the Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts in New York City. She received her BA From Oberlin College in Oberlin, OH and her MFA in 1993 from the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, MD. In 1994 she studied at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, Skowhegan, ME.

New Paintings by Jodi Chamberlain

RHV Fine Art is pleased to announce an exhibition of new paintings by Queens, NY based artist Jodi Chamberlain.

Ms Chamberlain paints mysteriously psychological vignettes of towns or sailboats perched high in the air on impossible stilts. Sometimes oddly shaped humanoid figures populate these platforms set against emotionally charged colorful skies. The larger paintings in this exhibition that range in size from 18” x 18” to 36” x 36” are puzzling and sometimes unsettling. Chamberlain’s imagery evokes questions about our society’s sustainability or anxiety, or possibly her own version of glass houses. Either way, the house-of-cards-like tableau is further enhanced by the smallest paintings in the show. These 6” x 6” paintings of clothes lines with t-shirts or bras billowing in the wind add a personal and intimate aspect to the largely public narrative of the larger works. Painted with Cezanne-esque brush strokes in similar vivid palettes as the larger pieces, these snippets of domesticity lengthen the narrative of what might be happening behind the walls of these stilt-cities so high in the air.

Sailboats are evidence of Ms Chamberlain’s passion for boating but can also be read as metaphors for movement, escape or freedom. However, floating on stilts, the boats obviously can’t get the sailor anywhere. As in the city paintings, we are looking into a strange world of fiery pink, orange and purple sunsets or sunrises with no discernable space except what might be generated by gradations in the color and value of the sky.

Although painted in a well considered, controlled manner Chamberlain’s work strikes notes of whimsy and the absurd. Heightened by careful choices of color and value, the emotional content of her work, uncertainty, anxiety and doubt, is slowly revealed over repeat viewing.

Tracy Lane Photography Joel Adas Painting

Urban life is full of frenetic episodes, fast paced exchanges and enclosed spaces. Sky Above seeks to explore moments of quotidian escape, split second glimpses and serendipitous events of quiet contemplation taken in the midst of fast paced urban existences. Throughout human history looking skyward has been a source of fascination, whether it is daydreaming or spiritual inspiration. This exhibition pairs the photographs of New York City native Tracy Lane and Brooklyn based painter Joel Adas. Though firmly rooted in the American landscape tradition Sky Above endeavors to explore a dialogue of sensibilities, light, color, experiences and time that is unique to the daily experiences of these two people.

Tracy Lane seeks beauty in the mundane. She looks for “a moment, when vision transports the viewer.” This selection of images is taken from her 10-year visual diary of images photographed out of the east and west facing windows of her Brooklyn apartment and from windows of airplanes. Lane’s morning and evening photographs, taken randomly when she is compelled to, record her fascination with the sky and evidence fleeting glimpses of experience. Her photographs of clouds and sky shot from the windows of airplanes document her movement through time and space. If it were not for the wing of the airplane, which takes on an architectural, even totemic quality, they would evoke a groundless dream-space. Ms. Lane studied at Bard College and has worked with numerous periodicals including, Elle Décor, Town and Country, Oprah magazine, Zink Magazine, Dwell, Martha Stewart and the New York Times Magazine.

For Joel Adas his constant fascination for looking up results in his “skyscapes” based on the artist’s snapshots or memories. He writes, “My goal is to make the images evocative and strangely familiar, suggesting a larger picture or context…” Framed by the naked limbs of trees in winter, distant horizons or slivers of buildings Adas’s compositions are quick “sketches” taken en route. Adas’s work is a visual moment in time and a result of the process it takes to make a painting. Improvisational and painterly, his paintings evoke memories of crisp winter days or the gathering of a summer storm that can almost be smelled. Mr. Adas received his MFA from Purchase College, State University of New York, 1996 and a BFA from the Mason Gross School of the Arts, Rutgers University in 1992. He has exhibited throughout the US and Great Britain.
